The purpose of this course is to provide the nurse with an in depth understanding of breastfeeding, including an intensive review of anatomy, physiology, emotional and social factors, and a review of problem solving protocols. Upon completion of this course, you should be able to

2. Discuss the American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk and other signs of the paradigm shift in favor of breastfeeding.
3. Review components of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
4. List the risk and disadvantages associated with artificial baby milk (ABM).
5. Describe the components and types of breast milk.
6. Discuss the anatomy and development of the breast and the physiology of breast milk production.
7. Identify key points of antepartum education and lactation assessments.
8. Outline the role of the doula.
9. Review various hospital routines that affect breastfeeding, including the use of labor medications and the neonatal assessment.
10. Describe the latch-on process.
11. List potential maternal complications that may interfere with breastfeeding.
12. List potential infant complications that may make breastfeeding difficult or impossible.
13. Compare and contrast various devices available for the breastfeeding mother.
14. Discuss issues that may arise during the early weeks and months of breastfeeding.
15. Identify support available for the breastfeeding couple.

I am not a nursing student nor an RN, just a woman interested in all things involving maternity and woman and child care. I thought that this was good comprehensive writing on all things breastfeeding. It is not a "How To" guide. As a general student, I would consider it similar to an introductory class text on breastfeeding because it touches on many topics, enough to bring them and some basic information to your attention, but if you wish, you could research much more into it. As a pursuer of maternity research, I really enjoyed it. It was free on the Kindle. I think that every woman would benefit from reading this. Formula is not a substitute, it is a last resort in the case of an emergency. Women need to be privy to this, and really should be conditioned better from birth to understand the difference between big business' agenda, and keeping women and children healthy. Someday when I choose to have children, I may look back on this book to help me choose and navigate through the hospital system. I believe that it might help me feel like a big fish in a small pond, as opposed to a small fish in a large pond--which is how most women I know [and I fear I will] feel in the over-sized/overreaching medical setting. Its milk people, not magic. This is light on science and heavy on sparkles. Reminds me of the environmental safety curricula produced by coal corporations and "donated" to elementary schools.
I was having trouble breastfeeding and had a lot of questions! This course was a godsend. It explains everything in a lot of detail. I understand it is meant for nurses, but its also great for moms! It helped me ease my worries and understand what was going on with my body.
I highly recommend it!
Great, objective resource if you are interested in breastfeeding. It is a little dry/technical at times, and maybe has fewer practical tips than other types of books, but overall it tells you all about the actual process of breastfeeding and why it is beneficial. I would highly recommend, especially because it's free!
This is one of the best things I've ever read. I wanted to know about breastfeeding, and this one went above and beyond any expectation. There is a wealth of information here that needs to be administered to all. Whether a woman has or has not breastfed their child or children, or whether she is looking for comfort in doing the best thing for herself and her future child or children... hopefully you get it. READ IT!
I read this book for CEUs. I am a BSN who needed to renew my RN,and also I needed to renew my CBC (certified breastfeeding counselor) certification. The author is very informative. She reviews breast anatomy, details milk production,goes over normal lactation, offers advice for difficult situations. I read this book very quickly and have sent many coworkers and even my manager to it to reference. The part of the book i like the best is how she explains the stages of how milk "comes in" and that in a normal breastfeeding relationship, stressing pumping in the first few days will not speed milk production. As a mother/ baby nurse, my hospital stresses pumping, but evidence doesn't actually support that!
I found this very informative and to provide a lot of good information, links, and items I would further research to have a good understanding of what should be normal policies on breastfeeding as well as what to discuss with my doctor. I feel like I will also be able to combat any pushy nurses with more concrete information if needed. Since my first birth in the hospital was not great and the breastfeeding "help" was dismal I'm very much looking forward to taking control of my breastfeeding situation this time. This was a great find in the library and I'm so glad that I stumbled upon it!
I purchased this at full price and my analysis is fair and impartial.
But this book is so much better than all the non-textbooks out there. It is well written and easy to read. It is very solution orientated and gave me some great advice. I am currently pregnant with my second child and my milk never came in with my first. I am praying for a differnet result this time and this book was (1) very encouraging to me to want to try to breastfeed again and (2) full of ideas and support resources I didn't know about last time. I am keeping my fingers crossed. It doesn't have a lot of pictures or illustrations - but once you know what to search for on the internet - you can find plenty of pictures.
